Do you love dogs? Your dream job is working with dogs?  Want to learn to work with them under the advisement of industry leaders and trainers? We may have the opportunity you have been looking for. Previous dog experience is not required but honesty, ability to work hard, be flexible and communicate well are required! In addition to learning to train client dogs with behavioral problems, and once an expected level of skill is acquired, you will have the opportunity to work with Police K9’s and Service Dogs.

Internship

Internships offer opportunities for advancement from intern to kennel tech, kennel tech to trainer, trainer to senior trainer. Trainers and Senior Positions are AmericanK9 employees. We will have opportunities for K9 Handler positions as they become available and once you have fulfilled a minimum of 2 years as a trainer.

Incumbent will learn and assist in a variety of steps using our methodology and philosophy of training  dogs. This position will enhance the knowledge and unique skills it takes to custom train a wide variety of dogs. Several programs are available, as well as our breeding program that trains and raises Police and Service Dogs.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must report to work on time
  • Maintain a well-groomed and professional appearance
  • Must have a reliable source of transportation
  • Maintain a flexible schedule – be available weekends and holidays
  • Must work well as part of a team and in a team environment, yet efficiently while independent
  • Good oral communication. Able to effectively and professionally communicate with staff members and clients regarding a variety of topics including, but not limited to: the well-being of dogs in our care (physical and emotional), important facility information, able to relay and communicate information from clients to other team members (and vice-versa), etc.
  • Frequently walk, kneel, lift up to 50 pounds, crouch, and other physical demands
  • Ability to make good decisions quickly
  • Able to bring dog(s) home for training

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting and learning all kennel technician responsibilities
  • Assisting Trainers/Senior Trainers/Training Director with dog training in order to gain skills.
  • Taking dogs home for training (as directed)
  • Learning to effectively and professionally communicate training concepts to the clients.
  • Begin learning about topics such as aggression, behavior modifications, anxiety, and much more!

Kennel Technician

Kennel Technicians are responsible for the general upkeep of any service dog at the facility, and for the cleaning of the facility.  Technicians must be able to connect with the dogs, other team members, board members, and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Feed dogs at facility (as required) and insure they have clean, fresh water.
  • Take dogs out for bathroom breaks, walks, playtime if requested.
  • Bathe and groom dogs, if requested.
  • Maintain the facility as a whole by performing tasks including, but not limited to: deep cleaning kennels on a regular basis, sweeping floors, disinfecting and wiping down surfaces, taking out the trash, cleaning bathrooms, checking equipment and supplies, poop clean-up, etc.
  • Exercise dogs, if requested.
